Three things decide how East Sussex drains: the chalk South Downs, the sandstone and clay of the High Weald inland, and a long stretch of exposed coastline. From Brighton round to Rye the gullies take in shingle, sand and salt, and the low ground behind the beach holds water rather than shedding it. Inland around Uckfield, Crowborough and the Rother valley you are on heavy clay and river flood plain, so water sits, and soakaways that were adequate thirty years ago no longer cope. What actually blocks drains here

On the coast, the recurring job is a gully that has silted solid. Inland on the Weald clay, the problem is the opposite. Water does not soak away, so a soakaway or a shallow run that coped for decades starts backing up in wet spells, and every autumn leaf-fall finishes the job. In the terraces of Brighton, Hove, Lewes and Hastings, the pipe is usually a Victorian combined run: one clay line taking both foul water and roof water for several houses at once.
